De 6 a 9 de março de 2025, meu marido e eu fomos acompanhados por Roberto Botelho, um guia de observação de aves de primeira linha. Percorremos os campos e florestas de São Francisco de Paula, cidade onde ele mora e, junto com sua esposa Sandra, mantém a agradável Pousada Recanto da Mata, onde nos hospedamos confortavelmente. Nosso objetivo era fotografar as aves da região e temos certeza de que isso não seria possível sem a excelente ajuda de Roberto. Com sua audição extremamente sensível à menor ou distante vocalização das aves, ele parava o veículo e imediatamente identificava as espécies presentes. Às vezes ele usava o playback para atrair a ave para se aproximar, mas tudo era feito com muita parcimônia. Conseguimos ver inúmeras espécies, nem todas fotografáveis ??devido à distância e limitações técnicas de nossos equipamentos, mas certamente voltamos com centenas de belos registros que só foram possíveis com a ajuda de Roberto. Excelente guia, incansável, muito conhecedor do seu trabalho, um estudioso de pássaros, com uma memória extraordinária para os mínimos detalhes das diferenças entre fêmeas e machos de várias espécies, e um ouvido incrível para identificar a presença de um pássaro pelo seu canto, antes mesmo de avistá-lo. Só podemos agradecer ao Roberto e gostaríamos de recomendar seu trabalho. From March 6 to 9, 2025, my husband and I were accompanied by Roberto Botelho, a top-notch birdwatching guide. We traveled through the fields and forests of São Francisco de Paula, the city where he lives and, together with his wife Sandra, maintains the pleasant Pousada Recanto da Mata, where we stayed comfortably. Our goal was to photograph the birds of the region and we are certain that this would not have been possible without Roberto's excellent help. With his extremely sensitive hearing to the slightest or distant vocalization of birds, he would stop the vehicle and immediately identify the species present. Sometimes he used the playback to attract the bird to approach, but everything was done very sparingly. We were able to see countless species, not all of which were photographable due to the distance and technical limitations of our equipment, but we certainly came back with hundreds of beautiful records that were only possible with Roberto's help. Excellent guide, tireless, very knowledgeable about his work, a bird scholar, with an extraordinary memory for the smallest details of the differences between females and males of various species, and an incredible ear for identifying the presence of a bird from its song, even before sighting it. We can only thank Roberto and we would like to recommend his work.

Meu filho me havia indicado o Roberto, porém eles tiveram apenas uma experiência de poucas horas. Então, eu estava apreensivo. Logo pude confirmar as habilidades do guia. Fomos para o sul do estado e fiquei impressionadissimo com o ouvido excepcional e sua memória incrível dos cantos. Foram muitas ocasiões em que parávamos o carro porque o Roberto havia escutado um lifer cantando no beira da trilha Em muitas outras situações, ele tinha o "endereço". Descia do carro e dizia: "é aqui. Vou chamar". Quando subimos a serra, o que parecia que não poderia melhorar, ficou ainda mais perfeito. Impressionante! Além de tudo, uma pessoa alegre, paciente, solidária e um ótimo interlocutor. Eu e minha esposa estamos imensamente gratos ao, agora, amigo, Roberto Botelho.

Sensacional a experiência que tive na região Sul do Brasil guiado por roberto em vários municípios deste estado. Roberto tem muita experiência e conhece todos os locais das aves na região. Fui muito prestativo e conseguiu superar nossas expectativas. Parabéns roberto pelo seu profissionalismo.

Roberto Botelho é um guia incansável com uma impressionante capacidade de reconhecer centenas de espécies pela vocalização e com conhecimento muito grande da região de São Francisco de Paula, onde vive. Com a ajuda da esposa Sandra, dirige a Pousada Recanto da Mata. No dia 8 de abril de 2024, após o excelente café-da-manhã na pousada, saímos com o guia Roberto para uma passarinhada na área rural da cidade onde ele nos levou aos locais que conhece e onde pudemos registrar mais de 20 espécies, como mocho-diabo, pedreiro, quem-te-vestiu, noivinha, sanhaço-papa-laranja, maria-faceira, borboletinha-do-mato, chupa-dente, arredio-do-gravatá, tipio, sabiá-do-banhado, mergulhão-caçador, alegrinho, cochicho, entre outros. Recomendo muito o Roberto para quem quiser passarinhar na região. Roberto Botelho is a tireless guide with an impressive ability to recognize hundreds of species by vocalization and with a great knowledge of the São Francisco de Paula region, where he lives. With the help of his wife Sandra, he runs Pousada Recanto da Mata. On April 8, 2024, after an excellent breakfast at the inn, we went out with guide Roberto for a bird walk in the rural area of the city where he took us to places he knows and where we were able to record more than 20 species, such as Asio stygius , Long-tailed Cinclodes , Black-and-rufous Warbling-Finch, White Monjita, Blue-and-yellow Tanager, Whistling Heron, Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet and Rufous Gnateater, among others. I highly recommend Roberto to anyone who wants to bird in the region.

On my recent trip to Brazil, I visited São Francisco de Paula (SFP) without much preparation, and didn't know about the local bird guides and lodging options. After a successful day in the grasslands finding the seedeater, monjita, saffron-cowled blackbird and reedhaunter on my own, I turned to forest birds on the second day. The map locations on eBird pointed me to Roberto Botelho's lodge as a hotspot for some of the targets I had, most notably Blacksmith Thrush. Parking my rental near Roberto's lodge entrance, I birded his woodlot from the margins, when - as luck would have it - Roberto emerged from his lodge and welcomed me in. His feeders caught my instant attention, providing easy views of Chestnut-backed Tanagers and other local canopy birds that are difficult to see well in other settings. He was very hospitable and showed me the way up to his ground-feeding spot, where the local Guan obliged easily. He allowed me to walk the trails in his woodlot, which produced a great Brown Tinamou sighting. I was so impressed that I decided to stay an additional night in SFP, in his lodge. After lunch, Roberto accompanied me into a local forest reserve (Parque da Ronda), where he was instrumental in finding Greenish Tyrannulet for me, a bird that's eluded me for years, while showing me many other cool local species, including Mottled Piculet. He also shared a location for the local population of Mouse-colored Tapaculo that later checked out. The next morning, before my departure, I tried all corners of his woodlot again for Blacksmith Thrush, but that was the only target I never ended up finding. (Luckily I saw it easily elsewhere on my trip - so I wouldn't advise spending too much time on it here at SFP). Roberto is clearly a very passionate host with a lot of enthusiasm for Rio Grande do Sul's birds. His lodge is a fantastic base for SFP, and I regret not having found his place immediately. I hope he's going to continue his amazing work with his local woodlot around the lodge, in which he has already documented an extremely high number of species. I can highly recommend his lodge and his services at SFP.

Roberto Botelho é um excelente guia de Birdwatching, conheci várias espécies de aves em São Francisco de Paula, RS, vale a pena!!!

We contacted Roberto before our stay in Canela in Rio Grando do Sul. We spent a full day around his home town, starting at his guest house. Although the day started out with mist, we saw quite a few lifers including some migrating parrots. He picked up the bird sounds really quickly. we were able to observe a variety of birds and some other wild life. As a bonus we had traditional BBQ from the region for lunch.

Excelent guide, fun to talk to, knows every spot for each species of bird, animal and even insect hahaha in his region, has amazing hearing and reached a much higher level of expectation that i previously had for this trip. Thank you, Roberto, was a truly amazing experience!!

Roberto has a great place for birders to stay in Sao Francisco de Paulo, in the Sera of Rio Grande do Sul. A lot of species come to his feeders. Birding with him in August for two days was a great experience and he helped me to see 120. species
