Macmillan and I trekked up Mount Kilimanjaro using the Umbwe route in early March 2023. I learnt a lot about the local flora and fauna from him. He shared many insights into the lifestyles of various birds we encountered, including explanations of differences between similar looking species. We exchanged ethnobotanical significance of some plants, and he shared interesting folklores, myths and local beliefs of some wildlife we encountered on our journey. Thanks to Macmillan's tutoring, I can now continue learning more about the birds in my West African neighbourhood via Merlin App, whose use he demonstrated in Tanzania. A truly brilliant young man, and a formidable ornithologist in the making.

My wife and I had the pleasure of spending time with Macmillan on Mount Kilimanjaro in February 2023. His knowledge of the native wildlife especially the birds was encyclopaedic! You can tell that birds were his real passion though - he could instantly and accurately identify them purely on chunks of their song, a display of true mastery in his craft. He also has the eyes of a hawk - spotting things and then pointing them out to us. He is very generous with his knowledge sharing copious details about the birds - and that really rubbed off on us. Spending time with Macmillan was one of the true highlights of my trip to Tanzania - you won't be disappointed in spending time in his company.
