For any keen birder, Western Kenya is an area one must explore - full of lifers is the best way to describe it! I had been eager to visit the region for a while and although we had limited time, Ouma managed to take us all over and fulfill most of my target species list in the short span of 2 nights. Ouma picked us in a rental car from Rondo retreat, and we headed from Mumias-Adungosi-Alupe-Amakura and spent a night in Busia. The next day, we went from Katotoi-Yala swamp. The highlight of our trip was sharing a delicious, home-cooked lunch prepared by Awuor, Ouma's wife, who catered to our vegetarian diet, with his four children. Ouma's knowledge of the birds in the area is exceptional, and he was aware of spots for every species that I wanted to see. His land in Katotoi hills, bordering Uganda, is a fantastic birding hotspot. We managed to see species such as the speckle-breasted woodpecker and the bamboo warbler, which is a skulking bird that he discovered being the first record for the country. Overall, the entire experience was incredible value for money, and Ouma's communication is quick and concise, something I really appreciated, as slow or unclear responses are often a major issue with bird guides in Kenya. I highly recommend all birders get in touch with Ouma, plus I've already referred him to all my friends. Western Kenya is a hidden gem waiting to be explored, and there's no doubt that Ouma is the perfect guide to help you discover all its incredible birdlife.

Joseph took us on a birding trip to Crater Lake. He said we would walk and then we would see more birds. We actually saw over 100 species in that one day. He also took us to a rarely visited lake where we saw a flock of swallows on the ground. He had outstanding knowledge about the birds, animals and plants. The following summer we went on a 10 day trip with him and visited safari parks. We also spent one day being driven round the rift valley which was amazing. Joseph is an exceptional guide with a lot of knowledge. He customized our trip to suit our budget and I cannot thank him enough . I really appreciated having a local Kenyan guide who took us to places that the usual travel companies do not visit.

I went on several Birding tours and safaris with Joseph whilst I was working as a teacher in Kenya. I first met Joseph when my mother, who is a birder, was coming to visit. We booked him for a 2 day Birding tour. I have never seen so many birds in my life, and I doubt I ever will again! Joseph is a great guide as he really knows his stuff! His passion for nature and conservation shines through. Every evening he would spend time talking us through everything we saw that day. When it came to safari tours he didn't just show us animals he also taught us about them. He also made us feel very safe. I tell everyone I know who is going to East Africa to book with Joseph, he really is the best! (I went on a few other trips with other guides).

Ouma has a lot of birding knowledge about Western Kenya in my experience. We took a one day guided tour out of Kisumu. He was friendly and accommodating.

Ouma was our guide for several days, when looking for very specific birds on our ‘wish-list’. In previous years we visited Kenya, Uganda and neighboring countries, therefore we had seen quite a lot of bird species. Ouma had the difficult task to add 10-12 ‘new’ birds, so-called ‘lifers’. Of course we enjoyed watching all the birds found in the west of Kenya, but Ouma went to some unfamiliar locations (not the standard national parks). He showed us the roosting place of Red-headed Lovebird. We walked his land and found the Speckled-breasted Woodpecker. In the surrounding fields we heard the Whistling Cisticola (and many more…). But Ouma also came with a surprise and showed us the recently discovered Bamboo Warbler! All those lifers are found in only a few places in the west of Kenya, but Ouma found them. In short, Ouma is very knowledgeable. And not only about birds but on specialist habitats as well. Highly recommended.
