Kopaonik National Park

Serbia

It is enough to visit the Kopaonik NP when the snow – natural and artificial – melts, to see the consequences of megalomaniac development of a city in the heart of a high mountain, not to mention the ski pistes cut into sensitive high mountain ecosystems. Forests, other montane vegetation and soils are bulldozed and fragmented to make way for 70 km of ski runs, plus access infrastructure. Crested Tits shun the newly created forest edge, while others such as Wood Larks and Red-backed Shrikes avoid ski runs, probably because of their lower arthropod richness and abundance.

There are over 170 bird species recorded within the national park, 115 of them breeding in recent years.

Kopaonik Mountain NP is largely suffocated by an oversized ski centre, imitating those in the Alps, yet, Kopaonik does not have the natural predisposition to be one. The consequences are already visible.
