With almost 70% of the total area covered by forest, represented within the altitude region of oak and beech habitats – at lower altitudes hornbeam and maple, oak on southern slopes; at higher altitudes beech, and at northern slopes planted conifers – the 506 m a.s.l. high Avala Mountain, some 15 km south of the city, offers a somewhat different set of birds.

The best season here would be spring and the breeding period, followed by winter when the mountain top attracts some northern guests to overwinter, as well as birds that come down from higher Serbian mountains to spend the winter in somewhat lower and more hospitable areas.

The best season here would be spring and the breeding period, followed by winter when the mountain top attracts some northern guests to overwinter, as well as birds that come down from higher Serbian mountains to spend the winter in somewhat lower and more hospitable areas.

Public buses 401, 403, 405, 407 and 408. From May to August, on Saturday and Sunday bus 400 goes all the way to the mountain top.

Public buses 401, 403, 405, 407 and 408.

You can follow a marked walking path, about 5 km long and with 300 m of altitudinal difference, crossing the mountain from west to east, ending in the village of Beli Potok. To return to the city, take bus number 402.

You can follow a marked walking path, about 5 km long and with 300 m of altitudinal difference, crossing the mountain from west to east, ending in the village of Beli Potok. To return to the city, take bus number 402.
