This is one of the main bird watching routes in the central Andes of Colombia. An accessible tour with several points to look for different species associated with high Andean forest and páramo, including some endemics such as Buffy Helmetcrest and Rufous-fronted Parakeet.

The forest and paramo escosysten is an area situated below the Ruiz volcano between 2600-4.000 m asl. All the route is a combination of montane forest, paddocks, effin forest, patches of bamboo and paramo.

It is recommended to be accompanied by a guide to more easily locate the species. The complete route has several stations or points where it is important to stop to look for the species:

1. Carretera Nevado del Ruiz - Ebird hotspot: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1252511

This point is located on the main road, you can get there by car. It is a high Andean forest – elfin forest around the road. Birding is done along 1 km of the road looking for birds in these forests.

Here it is common to see hummingbird species such as the Rainbow-bearded Thornbill, Golden-breasted Pufflegg, Viridian and Tyrian Metaltails. Less common but also present Black-thighed Pufflegg, Shining Sumbeam and Great Sapphirewing.

It is important to be attentive to mixed flocks, in which it is common to find: Golden-crowned Tanager (Iridosornis rufivertex), near endemic and local Black-backed Bush Tanager (Urothraupis stolzmanni), Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager (Anisognathus igniventris), Golden-fronted Redstart (Myioborus ornatus). Pale-naped Brushfinch, Glossy and Masked Flowerpiercers are common too. Here is possible to conect with Black-chested Mountain Tanager (Cnemathraupis eximia) rare and recently several records of the rare and scarce Masked Mountain Tanager (Tephrophilus wetmorei).

Other interesting species here an often heard most than viewed are:Paramo Tapaculo (Scytalopus opacus), Ocellated Tapaculo (Acropternis orthonyx) and Ash-colored Tapaculo (Myornis senilis). Here you can also look for White-browed Spinetail (Hellmayrea gularis) and Pearled Treerunner (Margarornis squamiger).

Finally, there are some records of the Rufous-fronted Parakeet (Bolborhynchus ferrugineifrons), but at this point it is rare although I have been able to observe it at sunset when they come to sleep on the rock walls.

Continuing along the road, approximately 1km away, on the right hand side of the road you will find a small rural school, this site is good for searching for Noble Snipe (Gallinago nobilis) in the flooded pasture and the crops.

2. Laguna Negra, Nevado Del Ruiz - Ebird Hotspot: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L4979884

This point is located 2 km after the School point, along the same road. There you will find a viewpoint towards the lagoon and a restaurant with local food at affordable prices. Here you can search Grass Wren (Cistothorus platensis), Stout-billed Cinclodes (Cinclodes excelsior), Brown-bellied Swallow (Orochelidon murina) and possible Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus).

From the viewpoint you will be able to see in the lagoon: Andean Duck (Oxyura ferruginea) and Andean Teal (Anas andium). A few meters before and by the paramo patch that is on the road to the left side it is possible to find Many-striped Canastero (Asthenes flammulata), Andean Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura andicola), White-chinned Thistletail (Asthenes fuliginosa), Brown-backed Chat-Tyrant (Ochthoeca fumicolor, Plain-colored Seedeater (Catamenia inornata) and Tawny Antpitta (Grallaria quitensis).

3. PNN Los Nevados--Centro de Visitantes Brisas - Ebird spot https://ebird.org/hotspot/L5069164

This point is located 7 km approx. after Laguna Negra point, along the same road. Previously, you will find a division on the road, you have to take the right one. At this point you reach 4000 mals aprox in paramo ecosystem and you will find the  visitor center of Nevados NNP, selling some snacks and drinks. Here you will find a small observation plataform and a trail into paramo to look for the Helmetcrest and other species. If you explain to the ranger that you are just interested in watching birds for a short while around the visitor centre you should not need to pay the park entrance fee.

Here you will find a small observation plataform, a deck and a short trail 150 mts aprox into paramo to look for the Helmetcrest and other species. These points are the best to look for the amazing and beautiful Buffy Helmetcrest. Also possible Andean Tit-Spinetail (Leptasthenura andicola), Tawny Antpitta (Grallaria quitensis),  White-chinned Thistletail (Asthenes fuliginosa), Andean Condor (Vultur gryphus) and Plumbeous Sierra Finch (Geospizopsis unicolor).

4. PNN Los Nevados--Cascada Gualí - Ebird spot https://ebird.org/hotspot/L7562640

Returning along the road to the divide, you will take the road to the right that leads to Murillo Town and in approximately 1km you will find a beautiful waterfall on the road with tourist signs. This point is the best one to try Plain-capped Ground-tyrant. Look for ir in large rock patches. Also records of Rufous-fronted Parakeet, Andean Condor, Great Horned Owl, Paramo Tapaculo.

Give recommendations for making your visit as productive as possible.

This is one of the main bird watching routes in the central Andes of Colombia. An accessible tour with several points to look for different species associated with high Andean forest and páramo, including some endemics such as Buffy Helmetcrest and Rufous-fronted Parakeet. The forest and paramo escosysten is an area situated below the Ruiz volcano beiween 2600-4.000 m asl. All the route is a combination of montane forest, paddocks, effin forest, patches of bamboo and paramo. The complete route has several stations or points where it is important to stop to look for the species: 1. Carretera Nevado del Ruiz - Ebird hotspot: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L1252511 This point is located on the main road, you can get there by car. It is important to be attentive to mixed bands, in which it is common to find: Golden-crowned Tanager (Iridosornis rufivertex), near endemic and local Black-backed Bush Tanager (Urothraupis stolzmanni), Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager (Anisognathus igniventris), Golden-fronted Redstart (Myioborus ornatus). Other interesting species that are heard above all often are:Paramo Tapaculo (Scytalopus opacus), Ocellated Tapaculo (Acropternis orthonyx) and Ash-colored Tapaculo (Myornis senilis). 2. Laguna Negra, Nevado Del Ruiz - Ebird Hotspot: https://ebird.org/hotspot/L4979884 This point is located 2 km after the School point, along the same road. There you will find a viewpoint towards the lagoon and a restaurant with local food at affordable prices.
