Finca el Porvenir

2.38717 , -74.62426

Colombia

Finca El Porvenir is located in the hearth of Caguan region, a historically iconic site for the recent Colombian peace process. More than a quarter of the extension of the farm has been preserved as humid tropical forest near the Andean Amazon foothills of the eastern mountain range. Monkeys, parrots, toucans, tanagers and antbirds abound due to their wide connectivity with adjacent forests of other farms that have decided to conserve their forests. This has created a biological corridor that connects Picachos and Tinigua National Natural Parks with the Losada River. This point is the exact limit between the Amazon basin to the south and the Orinoquía to the north.

From december to march is the dry season and from april to august is rainy. Rest of the year is variable. All seasons are great for birding if you have patience and a good umbrella! Don´t forget your rubber boots for a better experience specially at rainy season.

Is a good idea to start early at the farm (5am to get inside the forest at 6am and enjoy the antbirds and woodcreepers). After the high activity (6-8am) you can work with trogons, parrots, toucans, flycatchers and manakins. at midday is perfect to come back at the farm for lunch and go in the afternoon in a car to the Rio Losada riparian forest (20 min from the farm) to see Salvin's Currasaw, Drab Water Tyrant, Scarlet-crowned Barbet, White-eared Jacamar and more species.

Give recommendations for making your visit as productive as possible.
This may include for instance:
• best season
• best time of the day
• how much time to spend at the site
• best means of locomotion within the site
• recommended routes / areas within the site
• guiding

Until a few years ago the region of Caguan was considered dangerous but thanks to the peace process in Colombia the place is safe now... one of the favorite photos is with the sign of the town's name!

Although it is a humid tropical forest region, there are not as many mosquitoes as you would expect. Due to the presence of livestock pastures, scabies mites are more annoying, so it is recommended to wear long pants, socks and high boots. It is not usual to find snakes.

Are there any security issues or other annoyances at this site? For
instance, these may include:
• offenses like robbery or theft
• natural hazards
• dangerous or annoying animals or plants (mosquitoes, leaches, thorn bushes, etc.)
• noise pollution
