Cerros de Mavecure

3.47030 , -67.97664

Colombia

The most scenic and iconic birding location in the Puerto Inirida area, the Cerros tower over the surrounding landscape providing a rare reference point to the horizon line. The habitat around the cerros is mostly white sand forest and as such it hold several of the species typical of this habitat, most notably Plumbeous Euphonia. Due to the fact that it is a 3 hour boat ride from Puerto Inirida this area is perhaps not as well birded as areas closer to the city. The narrowing of the river creates some light rapids and this in turns attracts Black-collared Swallows which nest in the rocky outcrops along parts of the shoreline. The Cerros de Mavicure are also one of the few places in Colombia where you have good chances to see the rare Orange-breasted Falcon, which breeds in the cliffs of the smallest of the three cerros, the Cerro Mavicure.

The Cerros de Mavecure can be visited all year. The place is mostly visited for its spectacular scenery, but it has some good birds, too. The area is not much studied ornithologically. If you have enough time it is worth to explore the trail up to the Cerro Mavecure, the smalles of the three cerros, and some other trails in the area, for example the long trail (4–5 km) which leads around the Cerro Pajarito. For birding, and also to enjoy the scenery in the evening and morning light, it is necessary to stay at least one night here.

Depending on the water level, scan for the Orange-breasted Falcon from the rocky shores below Cerro Mavecure, the smallest of the 3 cerros. It breeds in the rock face of the Cerro Mavecure high above the river. On the shore itself you may find shorebirds, resting terns and Black-collared Swallows.

Give recommendations for making your visit as productive as possible.
This may include for instance:
• best season
• best time of the day
• how much time to spend at the site
• best means of locomotion within the site
• recommended routes / areas within the site
• guiding

The Cerros de Mavecure are accessible by boat (approximately 3hrs) from Inírida.

Inírida (also referred to as Puerto Inírida) itself is accessible almost exclusively by air from Bogotá or Villavicencio, flights leave almost daily. Inírida is served by the airlines Satena and Easyfly. Theoretically you can also travel to Inírida by boat from San José Del Guaviare, but the trip will take several days.

Explain from where and how to get to this site with private and public transport.

The main attraction here is the breathtaking scenery. It is worth to walk up the steep trail to the top of Cerro Mavecure, the smallest of the three cerros (only with a local guide). Moreover, there are some great places to take a bath, for example in the black waters of Caño San Joaquín. It is not advisable to swim in the Río Inírida though because there are stingrays and there may be dangerous currents.

Add information about other attractions at this site, including
• wildlife (apart from birds)
• sights (natural, cultural, archaeological, etc.)
• activities (e.g. for non-birding companions)

There are no security as long as you do are with a local guide. Since the area has very sandy soils there are few mosquitoes. You should bring a sun hat and sun cream. Only swim where your local guide recommends.

The steep trail up to Cerro Mavecure can get very slippery when it rains.
